Essence of Vedanta :: 14.01.2012

: Essence of Vedanta ::

:
The Perceptible universe is the gross manifestation of the cosmic reality called Brahman. Its projections and withdrawals take place like day and night, like wakeful state and sound sleep prolonged into aeons. This process of becoming manifest and going back to the unmanifest state take place eternally. It has neither beginning nor end. cycles transcend time.
Along with the projection of the universe living beings also make their appearance. they are infinite in number. Aided by nature they evolve from low order of existence to high order. The link among them is perfect. A plant slowly evolves and becomes man after millions of cycles. The continuity is kept up through aeons. Change of the physical body through death and rebirth is a necessity for evolution. The higher the birth the more perfected the mortal coils becomes. The self that goes on renewing the body through death and birth is called the Jivatman dependent on Parmatman which is God. Jivatman means the individual self or Atman enshrined in physical body. Man is the most highly evolved Jivatman. He requires many human births in order to attain self-perfection which enables him merge in Parmatman or God.

Karma or endeavour is the means by which beings sustain themselves and evolve into high order of existence. Sin or bad karma retards evolution while virtue or good karma aids it. Further bad karma brings in misery and good karma happiness. Heaven and Hell are creation of the Mind; they have no external reality. According to man's karma he is in a self created heaven or hell. Again happiness and sorrow are interrelated One does not exist to the exclusion of the other. for example the pleasure of eating a palatable dish does not exist to the exclusion of the pain of hunger. The goal in the life is to trancend both heaven and hell, happiness and misery, birth and death. Mundane existence persists until this is effected. That Jivatman which merges in Parmatmam or God does not again enter the wheel of birth and death. He attains Mukti or emancipation
