Hinduism..30.09.2012

Hinduism is also known as "Sanatana Dharma" to Hindus. In Sanskrit, the original language of India, 'Sanatana' means Everlastingand 'Dharma', by a crudetranslation, means Religion. The Everlasting Religion,Hinduism was founded, existsand flourishes in India.

What is Hinduism? Is it a religion or is it a culture? The truth is - it is both a religion and a way of life. India gave to the world the original, oldest and most profound philosophy of life. The brilliant ancestors of present-day indians explored the Truth behind our existence and gave several philosophies and theories to define the Truth. At the same time, they created a set of rules for"goodliving" on this earth. The philosophical concepts that Indians gave to mankind are eternal and constitute no religion by themselves. However, the rules for good or "Dharmic" living that they laid down constitute the Hindu religion.

Shakti... 28.09.2012

Shakti first manifests as icchā, the desire to create. Subsequently, it works through its two aspects: vidyā-śakti and avidyā-śakti or māyā- śakti. Both of these are conscious principles— the former is illuminating consciousness, the latter, veiled consciousness. Māyā-śakti is composed of the three gunas -- sattva, rajas and tamas. It is therefore known as trigunā-śakti or kāmakalā, and is symboli
zed by a triangle. The māyā-śakti is the cause of the material world. Maya is not an unconscious principle; it is consciousness veiling itself as the shakti of the Supreme Being.

Sri Ramakrishna has explained this with analogy: ‘He whom you address as Brahman is none other than She whom I call Śakti, the Primal Energy’. ‘Thus Brahman and Śakti are identical.
If you accept the one, you must accept the other. It is like fire and its power to burn. If you see the fire, you must recognize its power to burn also. You cannot think of fire without its power to burn, nor can you think of the power to burn without fire. You cannot conceive of the sun’s rays without the sun, nor can you conceive of the sun without its rays’.

"O God,.25.09.2012

"O God,
You are the Ancient One & the Lord of Shining Light, You dwell beyond all the darkness and the night; knowing You alone can a man cross over death, There is no other path for him to take."

''All heads are Your heads, Your faces, Yo
u dwell inside the heart & also in all hidden places.Through the whole universe, You have extended Yourself.''

''You are Shiva, the auspicious, the ever-present, perpetual Lord."

''With hands and feet everywhere, eyes and ears everywhere, heads and mouths everywhere, You have filled up every corner of the space.''

''You are Smaller than smallest and Larger than the largest."

"O Lord, Creator of even Brahma, the creator, Revealer to him of the knowledge called Veda, To You, I come in my longing for freedom; To You, for refuge, with reverence, I come!"

So let's pay our obeisance's to such an Infinite God. Let's also think that God is always near to us & is always in our heart. Then He too shall never give you up or never depart. Nataraaj.. 22.09.2012

Nataraaj statue, at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) Geneva, Switzerland is the world's largest particle accelerator, on the France-Switze
rland and border. The Indian government gifted a 6 feet Nataraja statue to CERN in 2004. It portrays Shiva's dance of creation and destruction, much like the dance of fundamental particles that generates and destructs matter and energy in the universe in various forms. A plaque next to the Shiva statue captures the contemporary connotation of the metaphor of Shiva's cosmic dance from Fritj of Capra's book "Modern physics has shown that the rhythm of creation and destruction is not only manifest in the turn of the seasons and in the birth and death of all living creatures, but is also the very essence of inorganic matter and for the modern physicists, then, Shiva's dance is the dance of subatomic matter. The metaphor of the cosmic dance thus unifies ancient mythology, religious art and modern physics.

conch 21..09.2012

The Significance of blowing the conch?

When the conch is blown, the primordial
sound of Om emanates. Om is an auspicious
sound that was chanted by the Lord before
creating the world. It represents the world
and the Truth behind it.

The puranic story behind this is, the demon
Shankhaasura defeated devas, the Vedas
went to the bottom of the ocean. The devas
appealed to Lord Vishnu for help. He
incarnated as Matsya Avataara - the fish
incarnation and killed Shankhaasura. The Lord
blew the conch-shaped bone of his ear and
head. The Om sound emanated, from which
emerged the Vedas. All knowledge enshrined
in the Vedas is an elaboration of Om. The
conch therefore is known as shankha after
Shankaasua. The conch blown by the Lord is
called Paanchajanya. He carries it at all times
in one of His four hands. It represents
dharma or righteousness that is one of the
four goals (purushaarthas) of life. The sound
of the conch is thus also the victory call of
good over evil.

Another well-known purpose of blowing the
conch and the instruments, known
traditionally to produce auspicious sounds is
to drown or mask negative comments or
noises that may disturb or upset the
atmosphere or the minds of worshippers.

Ancient India lived in her villages. Each village
was presided over by a primary temple and
several small ones. During the aarati
performed after all-important poojas and on
sacred occasions, the conch used to be
blown. Since villages were generally small, the
sound of the conch would be heard all over
the village. People who could not make it to
the temple were reminded to stop whatever
they were doing, at least for a few seconds,
and mentally bow to the Lord.

The conch sound served to briefly elevate
people's minds to a prayerful attitude even in
the middle of their busy daily routine. The
conch is placed at the altar in temples and
homes next to the Lord as a symbol of Naada
Brahma (Truth), the Vedas, Om, dharma,
victory and auspiciousness. It is often used
to offer devotees thirtha (sanctified water) to
raise their minds to the highest Truth. It is
worshipped with the following verse.

“Twam puraa saagarot pannaha Vishnunaa
vidhrutahakare Devaischa poojitha sarvahi
Panchjanya namostu te”.

Salutations to Panchajanya the conch born of
the ocean Held in the hand of Lord Vishnu
and worshipped by all devaas.

Tulsi: The Holy Basil..20.09.2012

Tulsi: The Holy Basil

The 'tulsi' plant or Indian basil is an important symbol in the Hindu religious tradition. The name 'tulsi' connotes "the incomparable one". Tulsi is a venerated plant and Hindus worship it in the morning and evening.
Dark or Shyama tulsi and light or Rama tulsi are the two main varieties of basil, the former possessing greater medicinal value. Of the many varieties, the Krishna or Shyama tulsi is commonly used for worship.

The presence of tulsi plant symbolizes the religious bent of a Hindu family. A Hindu household is considered incomplete if it doesn't have a tulsi plant in the courtyard. Many families have the tulsi planted in a specially built structure, which has images of deities installed on all four sides, and an alcove for a small earthen oil lamp. Some households can even have up to a dozen tulsi plants on the verandah or in the garden forming a "tulsi-van" or "tulsivrindavan" - a miniature basil forest.

Vaishnavites or believers of Lord Vishnu is pleased by Tulsi Worship. They also wear beaded necklaces made of tulsi stems.

Apart from its religious significance it is of great medicinal significance, and is a prime herb in Ayurvedic treatment. Marked by its strong aroma and a stringent taste, tusli is a kind of "the elixir of life" as it promotes longevity. The plant's extracts can be used to prevent and cure many illnesses and common ailments like common cold, headaches, stomach disorders, inflammation, heart disease, various forms of poisoning and malaria.

Traditionally, tulsi is taken in many forms: as herbal tea, dried powder, fresh leaf, or mixed with ghee. Essential oil extracted from Karpoora tulsi is mostly used for medicinal purposes and in herbal cosmetics, and is widely used in skin preparations due to its antibacterial activity. For centuries, the dried leaves have been mixed with stored grains to repel insects.

Ganesh Chaturthi 19.09 .2012

Ganesh Chaturthi is the Hindu festival celebrated on the occasion of birthday of Lord Ganesha, the son of Shiva and Parvati, who is believed to bestow his presence on earth for all his devotees in the duration of this festival. It is the day Shiva declared his son Ganesha as superior to all the gods. Ganesha is widely worshipped as the god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune and traditionally invoked at the beginning of any new venture or at the start of travel. The festival lasts for 10 days, ending on Anant Chaturdashi. While celebrated all over India, it is most elaborate in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Goa. Traditional stories tell that Lord Ganesha was created by goddess Parvati, consort of Lord Shiva. Parvati created Ganesha out of sandalwood paste that she used for her bath and breathed life into the figure. She then set him to stand guard at her door while she bathed. Lord Shiva returned and, as Ganesha didn't know him, he didn't allow him to enter. Lord Shiva became enraged, severed the head of the child and entered his house. After realizing that he had beheaded his own son, Lord Shiva fixed the head of an elephant in place of Ganesha's head. In this way, Lord Ganesha came to be depicted as the elephant-headed God. Ganesh Chaturthi was being celebrated as a public event in Pune since the times of Shivaji (1630-1680), the founder of the Maratha Empire. The Peshwas, the de facto hereditary administrators of the Empire from 1749 till its end in 1818, encouraged the celebrations in their administrative seat Pune as Ganesha was their family deity (Kuladevata).
Apart from the main motto of the festival, we also ought to keep in mind that by using Ganesha idols made of Plaster of Paris, we are polluting our own environment.. Instead of using POP, we must use eco-friendly Ganesha idols that will not cause any harm to our environment. When Ganesh idols are made out of paper mache, instead of POP, it does not create pollution. Very important thing is that these idols are cheaper than other idols. Similarly, these idols dissolve quickly in water and paper mache is not harmful to water hence there is no water pollution, as well as there are no remains of idols left on the seashore.
Wishing u all a very happy Ganesh Chaturthi..
(Be eco-friendly.. be happy)

Our Universe 18.09.2012

Our Universe with endless Galaxies is Infinite.
Now what is the relation of this Universe with
God, is what we shall know in this article. As
per one recent article on universe:
“Astronomers have unveiled the largest ever
3D map of the sky,
encompassing massive
galaxies and distant black holes. The new
map pinpoints the locations and distances of
over a million galaxies. The release includes
images of 200 million galaxies and spectra of
1.35 million galaxies, according to a Harvard-
Smithso nian statement with SDSS-III.
Mapping these big galaxies thus provides an
effective way to make a map of the rest of the
galaxies in the universe. With such a map,
scientists can retrace the history of the
universe over the last six billion years. With
that history, they can get better estimates for
how much of the universe is made up of
“dark matter” - matter that we cannot directly
see because it does not emit or absorb light -
and “dark energy”, the even more mysterious
force that drives the accelerating expansion
of the universe. We hope that our new map of
the universe can help someone solve the
mystery.”

Now God is also called Infinite. Infinite simply
means “Without Limits” & beyond the
comprehension of human mind.. When we
think of that infinite then we just think of the
limitless. Now God is called the creator of this
limitless Universe & is much bigger than this
Universe. Vedas say that all this Infinite,
limitless Universe was created with just one
fourth of the powers of God & three fourth of
His powers still remains with the God. So God
is beyond Infinite & is incomprehensible.

We human beings cannot measure the
vastness of the God & Universe due to
limitations of human mind. The above study
of scientists to measure, to have the pictures
& to map 200 million galaxies proves the
existence of so many & more galaxies which
exist in this universe. As per philosophy, all
these infinite galaxies are created by God
who Himself is infinite. God is infinite,
limitless, omnipresent & the one who fills this
limitless space. Such an Infinite God exists
everywhere & is not limited by time or space.
In all the religions of the world God is
designated as a singular, universal Supreme
Being who encompasses all this creation. His
all the attributes such as power, wisdom, love,
compassion etc. are limitless & hence Infinite.

Bhagwat Gita describes the God as unborn,
eternal, ever-existing, infinite and primeval.
God is never born nor dies at any time. God is
manifest & un-manifest both i.e. He is there
before the creation & also present during the
creation. He is omniscient (knows everything),
omnipresent (who is present everywhere),
omnipotent (who is having all the powers & is
all powerful), imperishable & indestructible.
He is invisible, inconceivable and immutable.
He is having supernatural powers. He is Truth
Absolute, Knowledge Absolute and is Infinite.

He is everlasting, present everywhere,
unchangeable, immovable and eternally the
same.

Why do we do Namaste? 16.09.2012

Why do we do Namaste?

Indians greet each other with namaste. The two palms are placed together in front of the chest and the head bows whilst saying the word namaste. This greeting is for all - people younger than us, of our own age, thos
e older than friends, even strangers and us. There are five forms of formal traditional greeting enjoined in the shaastras of which namaskaram is one. This is u
nderstood as prostration but it actually refers to paying homage as we do today when we greet each other with a namaste. Namaste could be just a casual or formal greeting, a cultural convention or an act of worship. However there is much more to it than meets the eye. In Sanskrit namah + te = namaste. It means - I bow to you - my greetings, salutations or prostration to you. Namaha can also be literally interpreted as na ma (not mine). It has a spiritual significance of negating or reducing one’s ego in the presence of another. The real meeting between
people is the meeting of their minds. When we greet another, we do so with namaste, which means, may our minds meet, indicated by the folded palms placed before the chest. The bowing down of the head is a gracious form of extending friendship in love and humility

The spiritual meaning is even deeper. The life force, the divinity, the Self or the Lord in me is the same in all. Recognizing this oneness with the meeting of the palms, we salute with head bowed the Divinity in the person we meet. That is why sometimes, we close our eyes as we do namaste to a revered person or the Lord – as if to look within.

The gesture is often accompanied by words like Ram Ram,” Jai Shri Krishna, Namo Narayanaquot;, Jai Siya Ramquot;, Om Shantiquot; etc - indicating the recognition of this divinity. When we know this significance, our greeting does not remain just a superficial gesture or word but paves the way for a deeper communion with another in an atmosphere of love and respect.

Teachers' Days

Teachers' Days are intended to be special days for the appreciation of teachers; World Teachers' Day is celebrated across the world on september 5. Ever since the importance of teachers has been recognized by UNESCO, by adopting the “Recommendation concerning the status of teachers”, World Teachers' Day has been celebrated annually. The idea of celebrating Teachers' Day took ground independently in many countries during the 20th century; in most cases, they celebrate a local educator or an important milestone in education (for example, Argentina commemorates Domingo Faustino Sarmiento's death on September 11 since 1915,while India celebrates Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan's birthday on September 5 since 1962. These two factors explain why almost all countries celebrate this day on different dates, unlike many other International Days.
